The Nasal Live Attenuated Influenza Vaccine: FluMist

This vaccine is a nasal spray type of live attenuated influenza vaccine. Live attenuated vaccines use viruses that have been weakened to eliminate pathogenicity while retaining their ability to stimulate an immune response. Other currently used live vaccines include:

・MR (Measles-Rubella) vaccine (injection)
・Varicella (Chickenpox) vaccine (injection)
・Mumps vaccine (injection)
・Rotavirus vaccine (oral)

FluMist was approved in the United States in 2003 and, as of April 2023, is approved in 36 countries and regions. It is now available in Japan this season. Because it is administered via the nasal passage, it induces both local immunity through mucosal IgA and systemic immunity.
