Total Knee Arthroplasty(TKA)
Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA) is a surgical procedure where the damaged and deformed surface of the knee joint, caused by osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis, is removed and replaced with an artificial joint made of materials such as metal, ceramic, or polyethylene. The artificial joint is designed to replicate the smooth movement of the natural joint and consists of three parts.
The type of artificial joint used depends on the severity of the condition. In less severe cases, only the surface of the bone is removed and replaced. However, when the knee joint is severely damaged and deformed, additional knee joint components may be required to fill in the worn-out bone.
[Partial Knee Replacement (PKR)]
In knee replacement surgery, there are two types: total knee replacement (TKA), where the entire knee joint is replaced, and partial knee replacement (PKR), where only a part of the knee joint is replaced.
Partial knee replacement is generally recommended for patients with relatively limited progression of pain. For example, when the cartilage on one side of the joint is worn out but the other side is relatively unaffected, only the damaged portion is replaced. In partial knee replacement, the artificial joint used is about half the size of the usual full joint, which means smaller incisions and less bone removal are typically required.
